Engagement photoshoots are a wonderful opportunity to capture some beautiful memories of you and your significant other. Figuring out what to wear for engagement photos is probably what I get asked the most. Some couples already have an idea and some don’t really know where to start. So I thought I’d write a blog going over few tips I always give people when preparing for their engagement photo session.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos Tip #1

The first thing I tell people who ask me for tips when deciding on outfits is to dress for the location and season: Consider the location and time of year when choosing your outfit. If you’re taking photos in Central Park or Prospect Park, for example, you might want to wear something comfortable and casual. If it’s a formal setting, dress up a bit. There are so many locations in NYC, so make sure you get specific on location and vibe you are wanting.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos Tip #2

When figuring out what kind of outfit to put together you need to ask how many outfit changes come in your engagement package. I always include one outfit change in my engagement packages. Which means people have the option to prepare two outfits for the session.

With two options I always suggest for people to find outfits that will give the photos different vibes. For example, you could decide on a formal outfit and a casual one. Or, if you’re not into the formal look you could choose 2 casual outfits while still making one a little more dressed up in your own way. The main goal is to make sure there are a variety of different photos in your final gallery.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos Tip #3

When considering how to coordinate with your partner on their outfit think about your outfits as one being. Unless you are purposefully wanting to match each other, think about complimenting your outfits. This could mean choosing complementary colors or patterns, or sticking to a similar style.

While most blogs will say to choose solid colors and stay away from patterns I disagree. I really like patterns and think they can really spice up an outfit! Take a look at this West Village Engagement session to see!

Another way to spice up your outfits is by accessorizing. Jewelry is great! Think about other items you can bring to quickly switch up your outfits. I love when couples bring jackets/hats to sessions. It’s another great way to add variety to your final gallery.

Final Tip

My most important tip is to choose an outfit that you feel confident and comfortable in. The way an outfit can make us feel like the hottest person ever is very under-rated. So make sure you choose an outfit that leaves you feeling like THHAAATTT BI*** 😏.

Finally, make sure that at least one of the outfits you choose is easy to move around in. When you are wanting to capture movement and candid moments it’s important to be in an outfit that isn’t super restricting.

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and happy. These photos are meant to capture your love and excitement for each other, so don’t be afraid to let your personalities shine through!
